HP subsidiary workers call off second stoppage day

30 Sep 2010

Employees at a HP subsidiary have deferred the second of two 24-hour stoppages at the firm’s plat in Dublin after an independent mediator was appointed to facilitate a resolution.

The workers had staged a stoppage on Tuesday, which included engineers and technicians who worked at HP Customer Delivery Systems.

The employees were dissatisfied with job security, redundancy term and pay at the company.

Today’s stoppage was called off after informal contacts between the Department of Enterprise, Congress and IBEC took place last night.

Industrial relations consultant Liam Doherty will be available to both parties to hear all of the issues.

The 40 members of the IBOA were going to have this picket at the start of August, however, the management gave the impression they would engage with them.

However, according to a union spokesperson, in the weeks following this, these attempts “fell flat” because the talks were to be confined to a small group of workers.

Management at the company said that it is “fully committed” to meeting and engaging with the employees to resolve the issue.

“Attempts by the company to date to enter into dialogue with employees through the company’s own internal staff representative body have been refused,” read a statement.

“At all times, HP has honoured its commitments and has operated in accordance with its company procedures in an effort to resolve this issue in a fair and reasonable manner.”

These workers provide maintenance services for electronic equipment, which include ATM machines and point-of-sale devices in shops.
