Yahoo! JAPAN to provide access to Google search engine

2 Dec 2010

A search engine alliance between Yahoo! Japan Corp and Google has been announced that will allow users of the Yahoo! JAPAN website access to Google’s search engine.

According to Google, the company’s search technologies will serve as the “underlying web search engine that compliments Yahoo! JAPAN‘s popular web directory and international guide”.

“We are very pleased to form an alliance with Google, which offers its service globally and has a very good reputation among Japanese internet users,” said Masahiro Inoue, president and CEO of Yahoo! JAPAN.

“Yahoo! is one of the most recognised internet brands on the planet,” said Larry Page, CEO and co-founder of Google.

“This partnership significantly extends our reach in Japan, one of the most important international markets.”

Default search engine

The announcement represents an extension of Google’s strategic relationship with Yahoo!, which has already seen Google selected as Yahoo!’s default search engine provider in 2000.

Japan’s anti-monopoly watchdog gave the official go-ahead on Thursday to a search-engine alliance between Yahoo Japan Corp and Google Inc that had been questioned by competitors, according to Reuters.
