Sun confirms Dublin layoffs

Sun Microsystems has confirmed that 24 workers at its East Point Strategic Software Development Centre are to be made redundant. A further 180 jobs at Sun in the UK are also to be cut.

The news follows a decision a month ago by Sun Microsystems to cut 3,300 jobs worldwide – approximately 9pc of its workforce – following an earnings warning that saw net losses of around US$800m.

In a statement this morning the company acknowledged that the layoffs were part of the global restructuring of Sun. It said: “The development centre in Ireland has therefore subsequently been affected by this global adjustment in resources but otherwise continues to operate as normal across a wide range of responsibilities.

“The company has made every effort to minimise the impact of this development for staff affected and wishes them well in every respect.”

Sun established its Strategic Software Development Centre in Dublin in 1993 where the company’s staff are engaged in high-level software engineering roles including operating and networking systems development, desktop development, open source technologies development, software localisation and system testing.
