Yahoo!’s editor-in-chief Jai Singh calls it quits

17 Jan 2014

Yahoo!’s editor-in-chief Jai Singh has resigned from his job, in another major departure for the company following the firing of its chief operating officer Henrique de Castro this week.

“I can confirm (Singh is) leaving Yahoo! effective tomorrow,” a Yahoo! spokesperson told Business Insider yesterday. “We aren’t commenting further.”

The reasons for Singh’s departure aren’t clear, according to re/code, but Yahoo!’s falling ad revenue has contributed to the company letting go of de Castro.

Singh joined Yahoo! in 2011, having previously worked as managing editor at The Huffington Post.

His departure may have to do with restructuring within the company. An internal memo CEO Marissa Mayer sent out to employees yesterday announced the changes, which includes chief marketing officer Kathy Savitt taking over the media and editorial unit.

Kara Swisher of re/code wrote, “Appointing a marketing person to be in charge of editorial is probably enough of a reason for many journalists to run screaming from the building, but it’s not clear what prompted Singh’s exit. In addition, Savitt has a very mixed reputation – and this is me being polite – inside Yahoo!”
