7 Jun 2011

Irish energy tech company OpenHydro aims to hire 20 new people over the next 12-18 months in line with its plans to scale up production of its tidal turbines.

OpenHydro designs and manufactures marine turbines for generating renewable energy from tidal streams and currently has a workforce of around 50 employees mostly located at the company’s technical centre in Greenore, Co Louth.

The new positions that OpenHydro is looking to fill are primarily in engineering and operations, to include project engineers and managers, manufacturing engineers, and specialist finite element and structural engineers.

The company is also looking for engineering graduates who will have the opportunity to start and develop their careers with OpenHydro.

“OpenHydro is entering a further exciting phase of growth as we position ourselves to supply tidal turbines to projects in France, Canada, the US, Ireland and the UK. Now is our time for expansion,” said James Ives, chief executive of OpenHydro.

“While we have cutting-edge technology, we believe that our people are our most valuable asset and we are determined to reward and invest in them.”

International opportunities

Roisín Foley, HR manager at OpenHydro, added: “We are committed to investing in training and development for all our employees. While our technical centre and manufacturing base is in Greenore, Co Louth, we have ongoing projects around the world and there are opportunities to travel internationally.”

OpenHydro has a project portfolio spanning the US, Canada, France, Scotland and the UK’s Channel Islands, with utility partners including Bord Gáis, EDF, Nova Scotia Power, SSE Renewables and SnoPUD.
