Unum, the Tennessee-headquartered provider of financial protection benefits in the United States and United Kingdom, has appointed Oliver McKenna as managing director of the company’s Irish operations based at Carlow.
Unum announced plans in February 2008 to establish a strategic software service centre in Carlow and the company is now based at the Shamrock Plaza development in the town centre.

McKenna, a BSc in Computer Science graduate of the University of Ulster and a postgraduate of the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, is married to Eleanor and the couple has three children – Ronan, Niamh and Darragh.
Unum’s employee benefits portfolio includes disability, life, accident and critical illness insurance, which help protect millions of working people and their families in the event of illness or injury. The company reported revenues of US$10.3bn in 2011, and its subsidiaries – Unum US, Colonial Life and Unum UK – provided more than US$6bn in benefits during the same year.
