In general, you have no legal right to be paid by your employer when you are sick. It is up to the individual employer to decide their own policy on sick pay and sick leave.
Your written statement of the terms of your employment (which must be provided to you within two months after starting your job) should outline your employer’s policy on sick leave and sick pay.
If you are not entitled to sick pay, you may apply for illness benefit if you have sufficient social insurance contributions.
If your employer does provide you with sick pay, they may require you to sign over any illness benefit you receive from the Department of Social Protection.
If you are applying for illness benefit, you should do so within seven days of becoming sick. No payment is paid for the first three days of your illness.
