Successful video website YouTube is expanding its staff by 30pc, the company announced in a blog posting.

The Google-owned company wrote about the success of the website, saying more than 35 hours of video are uploaded to its site every minute, with videos viewed more than 2bn times a day.

“We now have aspiring filmmakers and musicians building their careers on YouTube, activists opening our eyes to global issues and individuals telling their stories in ways that only video can capture. And because we believe that technology and platforms like YouTube are giving rise to the most diverse set of faces and voices ever seen or heard in human history, us YouTubers really enjoy and feel proud to work here,” the blog said.

YouTube, which already employs 650 staff, said the majority of the new jobs will be at its San Bruno, California, headquarters, with the remainder in cities including Milan, St Petersburg, Tokyo and Zurich. The jobs on offer range from advertising and sales to engineering positions.

In 2006, Google acquired YouTube for $1.65bn and the video-sharing site now operates as a subsidiary of Google.
