Opportunity for Irish coders to join Google Summer of Code
Irish coders have an opportunity to apply to join Google’s Summer of Code project and spend the summer of 2012 earning money writing code for open-source projects, the company confirmed.
Today Google launched the Summer of Code, a global programme that gives university students a stipend to write code for open-source projects over a three-year period. Applications have to be in by 6 April.
“As it's a global initiative, we are calling all coders," a spokesperson confirmed, before adding: "but please study the FAQs."
Accepted students are paired with a mentor from the participating projects, gaining exposure to real-world software development and the opportunity for future employment in areas related to their academic pursuits, Google said in its blog.
“Best of all, more source code is created and released for the use and benefit of all."
Google employs more than 2,000 people in Ireland, which means there's an ample opportunity for local coders who meet the grade to get some first-hand software development experience and expertise. Oh yeah, and achieve ultimate glory.
