Today we continue our countdown of Ireland’s top jobs announcement stories of 2012. It was the year companies in sectors that are thriving despite the downturn – technology, science and pharma – created jobs in their organisations, ranging from multinationals to start-ups.

Agri-food and food innovation company Kerry Group, for example, announced 900 jobs, betting giant Paddy Power proclaimed 800 new jobs, and financial services giant Northern Trust revealed it would be hiring to fill 400 positions.

US website Ancestry.com – the world’s largest for-profit genealogical company – is to locate its international operations in Dublin. Starting with 15 people, the operation will grow to 50 people within two years.

The company has leased a property on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in Dublin.

SumUp, a young start-up company that provides small firms with mobile point of sale services via Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android smartphones, is to create 40 new jobs at a new technical support operation in Dublin.

SumUp is an m-commerce technology company dedicated to helping small firms overcome issues with accepting credit and debit card payments.

1377 new jobs as five emerging tech firms locate across Ireland

Limerick, Dundalk and Dublin will benefit from five new jobs announcements from overseas emerging tech firms that have chosen to locate in Ireland – these include Culture Translate, Diaceutics, Nimble Apps, iMosphere and Unique Digital.

The announcements came as part of IDA Ireland’s Expand & Internationalise your business through Ireland event in Berlin in April, which was attended by some of the leading emerging companies in Europe, showcasing Ireland as the location of choice for high-growth companies seeking to establish an international base.

12Career event organisers anticipate about 4,000 jobs on offer at event

Career Zoo took place in the Convention Centre Dublin in September, and prior to the event, its director had been hopeful there would be thousands of jobs on offer, with a section devoted to the tech industry.

“We anticipate that employers will be actively recruiting for approximately 4,000 professional jobs on the day across a variety of different sectors and we would encourage people to bring along their CVs,” director Brian Ó hOisín had said.

Casual games provider Big Fish is expanding its cloud gaming research and development initiative at its Cork operations, which will create 30 highly skilled jobs in the process.

Big Fish’s cloud gaming service will run the firm’s gaming catalogue in the cloud, allowing people to access its games on multiple devices and platforms.
