Brilliant minds: women and girls in mathematics (infographic)

16 Apr 2013

Men and women are just wired differently. It’s because of stereotypes. Men are just better at the subject. These are reasons that have been given as to why more men pursue mathematics studies and careers than women, and a new infographic takes a closer look as to why this is still the case.

The infographic by OnlineColleges published on Visual.ly cites several studies about women and mathematics, taking a particular look at the impact of negative stereotypes surrounding girls and mathematics. The studies included in the infographic yeild an overall mixed result.

There’s more positive information, too. The infographic also gives a nod to three notable women mathematicians and provides tips on how to encourage girls in maths: expose them to maths early and often, encourage participation in special programmes (both in and out of school), and match girls and women with mentors are just some of the suggestions.
