Employers have a long-term concern about filling 21st-century job openings because the workforce lacks skills, reveals a new infographic that takes a closer look at this skills gap and how science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are key to growth and innovation.
While the infographic published by MathMovesU on Visual.ly provides US statistics, it echoes facts pertaining to Ireland – many people are looking for work, yet job vacancies exist. In Ireland, many of these job vacancies are in the IT sector.
In the US, for example, only 4pc of the nation’s workforce is composed of scientists and engineers, yet this group disproportionately creates jobs for the other 96pc.
Such STEM jobs lie across various industries, as well: photography, nutrition, medicine, architecture, animation, aeronautics, forensic science, and computer or video-game design, the infographic states.
On a more positive note, the infographic reveals that educators, parents, communities, businesses and policy-makers are taking steps to improve STEM education and to prepare – and maintain – the workforce of tomorrow.
