Career memes of the week: online journalist

6 Aug 2013

We’ve poked fun at countless careers in our career memes of the week round-ups, but this week we turn the spotlight on ourselves and look at the funny side of online journalism. Let it never be said that we can’t take a joke!

In recent years, online news media has become the first port of call for many to find out what’s happening in the world around them. From current affairs and world news to entertainment and technology – if it’s news, the internet has it covered.

The immediacy of social networks like Twitter means that stories often break there and, with worldwide resources at our fingertips, research has become faster than ever before.

But with great technology comes great responsibility and journalistic standards can’t be forgotten in the race to be first online with the story. No one gets it right 100pc of the time, though, which is why we have the humour of the internet community to hold us accountable for our foibles.

According to PayScale, journalists in Ireland earn, on average, anything between about €20,000 and €70,000 a year, and this is one profession where women outnumber men at 56pc to 44pc.
