5,000 construction jobs as Intel invests US$5bn in Irish operation

27 Mar 2014

More than 5,000 construction workers are involved in a project to prepare Intel’s Irish operations for the latest technology. The investment represents the largest private investment in the history of the Irish State.

The company today released details on the scale of its investment at its Leixlip facility in Co Kildare, including a spend of US$5bn on an ongoing construction upgrade, which is employing 5,000 additional workers.

Intel has been manufacturing in Ireland since 1989, when it first opened at a former car showroom on the Long Mile Road.

At this Leixlip site, the Irish management and employees have continued to grow their role in Intel’s worldwide business for more than 25 years – winning new projects for Ireland and, in the process, developing some of the most advanced manufacturing facilities anywhere in the world.

This investment is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland.

A major win 25 years ago is still paying dividends

The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, TD, said Intel is a huge part of Ireland’s FDI landscape.

“It was a major win 25 years ago when the company first decided to locate operations here and it has made a massive contribution to the Irish economy in the years since then,” said Bruton. “Today’s confirmation that it has invested US$5bn and is employing 5,000 people in construction as part of its latest project shows just how important it is for Ireland. We look forward to working with Intel in future years to continue to develop and strengthen its hugely important business here.”

One of the major developments of note in recent years has been the transition of Intel’s operations in Ireland from that of pure manufacturing into the areas of research and development (R&D). Last year for instance, Intel and IDA announced both organisations had collaborated on a new Intel Galileo development board, which was the first Intel product developed and designed from inception in Ireland.

“Intel is behind the biggest investment in the history of the State at Leixlip and the scale of its operations there continue to develop,” IDA Ireland chief executive Barry O’Leary said.

“The future is bright for the company and the facility, and it is in a strong position to take on future capacity in the years ahead, helping to underpin the existing operations, which employ 4,500 people.”
