Career memes of the week: electrician

22 Jul 2014

This week’s career memes focus on electricians, deemed one of the top 10 jobs in green technology with a projected 12pc growth through 2018, one report suggests.

Boston.com points to renewable energy in terms of this growth. The installation of transformers, solar panels and power grids at power plants require the work of electricians.

In addition to performing actual installations, electricians also plan the layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures, based on specifications and local codes, and often work from roofs, ladders, scaffolds or cramped spaces.

They use tools and equipment to test, maintain, inspect, diagnose and repair or adjust malfunctioning systems or components.

Electricians, who may require a licence to work, may have taken part in an apprenticeship programme that has combined classroom instruction with on-the-job training.

Among the traits electricians require are good manual dexterity, eye-hand co-ordination, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

In Ireland, an electrician can expect to earn an average of €16.94 per hour, according to PayScale.com.
