Prior to working, an automation engineer will usually have completed an education in engineering that includes a focus on maths, statistics, robotics and systems, such as automation and manufacturing systems.

Skills an automation engineer requires are creativity, communication, troubleshooting, manual dexterity, attention to detail, and understanding computer programming and software development.
