Having spun off from Distilled Media, Journal Media has revealed it is aiming to create 35 jobs over the next three years across its three online publications.
As part of its attempts to separate its media business with Distilled Media’s other enterprises including Boards.ie and Daft.ie, the new media outfit will now be putting a particular emphasis on sports coverage with the future hiring of new journalists.
As part of this new focus, the company has also said its sports news website, thescore.ie, will be rebranded The42. Those with good Irish sports trivia knowledge will know that refers to ‘rule 42’, which allowed for non-Irish sports to be played in Croke Park, Dublin.
Despite its distinctive Irish connotation, Journal Media’s sports editor Adrian Russell said the name reflects a changing Irish readership, as well as it being more understandable to an international audience.
“We chose The42 as a hat-tip to this new generation of Irish sports fans, who are digitally savvy, engaged, passionate and want to be at the heart of the social conversation.”
The company has seen significant investment in recent years and aims to double the size of its business by 2017, with its current staff numbers now reaching 80.
The Dublin city centre-based company also confirmed it is planning to launch a new business online publication early next year.
