10 security engineer memes hack into profession

This week’s career memes spotlight security engineers, following news that software company Symantec has uncovered a spying bug called Regin that experts say has hit Ireland.

Symantec has said that due to the sophistication of the bug, it was likely created by a government. Regin can capture screenshots, record passwords and recover deleted files.

What they do: It is the job of security engineers to safeguard networks and the sensitive data within, such as client data, trade secrets and financial records, from hackers and cyberattacks. Security engineers focus on the security aspect of the design of systems to protect the networks, and address potential and actual security problems.

What they dont do: Patrol stores for shoplifters.

Educational requirements: A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, systems engineering, information systems or related fields.

Required skills: IT support, security compliance, system administration, problem solving, communication, attention to detail, ability to detect phishing attempts and computer viruses.

Salary: In Ireland, a security engineer can expect to earn an average annual salary of €45,781, according to PayScale.com.
