The city of San Jose, California, has topped a new clean-tech index for US metropolitan areas that has been compiled by the research consultancy Clean Edge.

The aim of the index is to show how the 50 largest US metro regions compare across the clean-tech spectrum. And West Coast cities have dominated the top 10.

Clean Edge said the index assessed clean-tech leadership in city areas around green buildings; advanced transportation; clean electricity and carbon management. It also looked at clean-tech investment, innovation and workforce.

According to Clean Edge, the top 10 metro regions in the US in its clean-tech index are:

  1. San Jose, California
  2. San Francisco, California
  3. Portland, Oregon
  4. Sacramento, California
  5. Seattle, Washington
  6. Denver, Colorado
  7. Los Angeles, California
  8. Washington, DC
  9. Boston, Massachusetts
  10. Austin, Texas

The index also ranked the top metro regions with the largest share of electric vehicles on the road. These metro areas are all in California and include San Francisco/San Jose, Los Angeles/Riverside, Sacramento and San Diego.

Clean Edge indicated that Boston, San Jose and Salt Lake City have the most licensable clean technologies coming out of their university labs, per capita.
