Interview: Dublin City Manager Dr John Tierney on green growth and innovation in the capital (video)

Dublin City Manager Dr John Tierney

Dublin City Manager, Dr John Tierney, is leading the capital’s drive toward green growth, innovation and sustainability. He spoke to us about initiatives like the Green IFSC, the Green Way and plans during Ireland’s hosting of the EU Presidency in the first half of 2013.

As Dublin City Manager and CEO of Dublin City Council (DCC), Tierney believes Dublin has much to offer when it comes to being a hub for green growth. When we meet during Innovation Dublin, he cites the various initiatives, from the Green IFSC to the Green Way, from the Smart Cities initiative to DCC’s sustainability reporting, as examples of the move that is on to make Dublin a sustainable city with innovation at its heart.

He says the work going on within DCC on sustainability reporting is extremely important, as it benchmarks the council’s progress against various criteria. “We know we have a bit to go,” says Tierney. “But if you measure how you’re progressing, I think it will be demonstrated to be quite advanced.”

Ireland, of course, hosts the EU Presidency in the first half of 2013, and Tierney believes it is an opportunity to showcase the city’s progress in terms of green growth and innovation. He welcomes the fact that Silicon Republic and Green IFSC will be hosting the Green Growth Forum in The Convention Centre Dublin in January, and also says it is the intention to follow up in June with a major European Sustainability Summit.
