Severe weather hits broadband and phone services

1 Dec 2010

Eircom has said the severe weather continued to affect broadband and phone services and that fault counts in the worst affected areas on the East Coast have risen to 4,600, with an additional 1,100 reported this afternoon.

The company said 600 Eircom crews are working along the East and West Coasts to restore service.

Some 300 crews in Dublin alone are working to clear about 1,100 faults in the greater Dublin area. Many of these were caused by lightning strikes at the weekend.

“Service has now been restored to more than 3,600 customers since Monday, despite the fact that Eircom crews continue to be hindered by very poor weather conditions. Road conditions remain very poor in many areas and parts of Co Wicklow with high faults continue to be inaccessible for our technicians.

Worst impacted areas

“The worst impacted areas are Aughrim, Roundwood, Glendalough and Newtownmountkennedy.

“Feedback from our repair technicians indicates lightning damage to internal wiring, master sockets and modems as the most common problem. All available technicians have been diverted onto fault repair for the remainder of the week.

“With forecasts predicting snow and icy conditions to continue through the week, Eircom again asks customers to be patient as we work to repair all faults as quickly as possible.

Eircom said customers can log faults on the “Log a Fault” section of www.eircom.ie or via customer service line 1901. Twitter users can contact @eircom or the Eircom forum.
