Signs that BlackBerry outage is lifting

The BlackBerry Curve

There are indications that the BlackBerry outage that saw millions of users locked out of email, BBM and internet services over the past four days is abating.

Research in Motion stated today: “From 6am BST today, all services across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as India, have been operating with significant improvement.

“We continue to monitor the situation 24×7 to ensure ongoing stability. Thank you for your patience.”

The problem is understood to be caused by a failure within Research in Motion’s own infrastructure. A transition to a backup switch did not go according to plan, causing a large backlog of data.

Locally, there are signs the service is improving, Vodafone said today. “Since midnight last night, BlackBerry services for most Vodafone Ireland customers has improved and while a data backlog is being cleared, currently the service appears to be stable,” a spokesperson for Vodafone in Ireland said.

“We will be closely monitoring service levels and stability throughout the day.”
