Killarney, Co Kerry, is about to become the first town in Ireland to roll out complementary Wi-Fi to passers-by and tourists after signing a deal with Bitbuzz. The move follows the launch of Bitbuzz Freedom on Grafton Street in Dublin last year.
The service will allow smartphone-toting punters to use shopping apps, social network and check maps in 20-minute sessions for free.
The new Bitbuzz service will soon be available on Main Street, High Street, Plunkett Street and new Street in Killarney and will be expanded to additional areas later in 2013.
“We believe that complimentary Wi-Fi has become an essential service for international tourists and we are delighted to assist the town of Killarney in improving its already stellar tourist offering,” said Bitbuzz chief executive Shane Deasy.
Bitbuzz uses multi-band wireless point-to-point backhaul technology to ensure a more robust system than traditional mesh networks.
The company has seen a 46pc increase in registered users, which was boosted by the launch of Bitbuzz Freedom last year.
“We would like to thank the business owners in Killarney for helping us to provide Bitbuzz Freedom to the town,” Deasy said.
