Satellite broadcaster Sky claims that 3,000 Irish homes per week are connecting their Sky+ HD boxes to broadband in order to access its On Demand service.
It said today that the total number of Sky+ HD boxes connected in Ireland now stands at over 112,000 boxes.
“The rapid growth in on demand viewing shows just how much customers love watching TV on their own terms – whether that’s the latest movies available instantly on demand on their living room TV set or to catch up with last night’s new drama series on the way to work,” said Mark Anderson, Sky Ireland’s director of sales and marketing said.
Since the launch of Sky’s Catch Up TV service in Ireland earlier this month, an additional 27,000 customers have connected their Sky+HD boxes to broadband to uncover over 10,000 hours of content via On Demand.
Across UK and Ireland 2013 was a record-breaking year for connected TV viewing – with more than 450 million on demand requests through Sky+HD boxes, double the number from 2012.
Viewing requests on Sky’s mobile TV service, Sky Go, also grew to 770 million, up from 590 million in 2012.
In total Sky customers requested 1.2 billion shows and movies through Sky’s connected services in 2013 – averaging 38 requests per second.
