China Unicom, which boasts more than 130m subscribers, has signed a deal with Irish mobile technology company Cubic Telecom to enable machine-to-machine (M2M) devices and OEM wireless connectivity on the Chinese network.

The Cubic Telecom platform provides a proactive over-the-air (OTA) embedded solution enabling software updates, telematics services, infotainment, location-based services and real-time data management for M2M service providers and OEMs.

An application of Cubic’s platform solution is the deployment of embedded internet connectivity for automotive companies throughout China. An example of this is the Qualcomm Gobi 6200 chipset and the China Unicom HSPA+ network launched this week in Beijing, the city in which China Unicom has its headquarters.

“Our platform technology provides a means for OEMs to establish a continuous, post-sale relationship with their customers and increase satisfaction and loyalty to the brand, while generating sustainable incremental revenues,” explained Cubic Telecom CEO Barry Napier.

“We have designed our OTA solution to enable connectivity not just for today, but for the future needs of the connected device globally on the best-in-class mobile networks.”

Last year, Cubic Telecom secured US$5.2m in funding from US telecoms tech giant Qualcomm, ACT Venture Capital, TPS Investments and Enterprise Ireland.
