Telecoms veteran and former CIO of Hong Kong Jeremy Godfrey has been appointed the new chairman at Ireland’s telecoms regulator ComReg.
Godfrey will replace outgoing ComReg chairman Kevin O’Brien, who will remain with ComReg as one of its three commissioners as well as vice chairman of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC).
Godfrey has over 30 years’ experience in telecommunications, IT and public policy. He was the Government Chief Information Officer in Hong Kong from 2008 to 2011.
He has been a partner in PA Consulting Group, has held senior roles in Hong Kong Telecom and the Cable & Wireless Group, and has worked for the UK Department of Trade and Industry and as an independent consultant. He was appointed a Commissioner in ComReg in August 2013.
“ComReg plays a critical role in regulating the telecommunications and postal sectors and has a key role in creating the environment to optimise continued commercial investment in the sectors,” Communications Minister Alex White TD said.
“It is also playing a critical role in assisting in the development of the Government’s plans to address the next generation broadband deficit in rural Ireland through the National Broadband Plan.
“Jeremy’s experience as ComReg Commissioner since 2013 and previously his role as Government chief information officer in Hong Kong will equip him to succeed in this exciting and challenging role,” White said.
