The 10 billionth track was downloaded from Apple’s iTunes Store today and thankfully it wasn’t something from the Glee soundtrack or even worse Jedward’s latest single. The 10 billionth song was a Johnny Cash number, ‘Guess Things Happen That Way’.
The downloader was Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia, USA, and he received a US$10,000 iTunes gift card for his troubles.
The Top 20 most downloaded iTunes songs of all time since the store opened in 2003 are on the radio-friendly pop side, with Black Eyed Peas taking the number one spot for I Gotta Feeling as well as the number three spot with Boom Boom Pow.
Lady GaGa made it in a number two with Poker Face while Jason Mraz, Coldplay, Leona Lewis and Taylor Swift also made it into the Top 10, showing how recently these tracks were downloaded.
Apple hasn’t given an indication of when the bulk of these songs were downloaded, but one would assume from the release date that a it was in the past year or so, showing how popular digital downloads are really becoming right now even though the format has been around for years.
“We’re grateful to all of our customers for helping us reach this amazing milestone,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice-president of internet services.
“We’re proud that iTunes has become the number one music retailer in the world, and selling 10 billion songs is truly staggering.”
