Sony and Sky bring 3D to Ryder Cup

1 Oct 2010

Sony Professional is working with BSkyB to bring live 3D coverage of the 2010 Ryder Cup, which begins today.

The Ryder Cup will mark the biggest live 3D production broadcast this year and is the second major international sporting event covered in 3D that Sony has been involved in, following the 3D FIFA World Cup.

The event will use Sony’s long-term partner Telegenic and will see it use Sony’s 3D Outside Broadcast trucks to scale up the 3D operation.

The T18 OB truck will be used for production, camera engineering, sound and slow motion replays and the T19 OB truck will focus on coverage and 3D engineering.

Production and set up will consist of Sony HDC-1500R cameras on 12 3ality rigs and four Element Technica rigs, along with four specially designed wireless 3D cameras to capture the action over the 32km course.

“The Ryder Cup production has created a whole set of new challenges for us, unlike football, where the cameras are fixed, a lot more rigs are needed in order to cover vast amounts of ground,” said Mark Grinyer, 3D sports solutions business head for Sony Professional.

The cameras are being used by European Tour Productions to film live coverage of The Ryder Cup, which can be seen in 2D and 3D on Sky Sports for the UK and Ireland.
