Sony creates VAT-back scheme for Christmas shoppers

8 Nov 2010

Sony is offering a VAT-back scheme to customers on almost 100 items, including digital cameras, e-readers, laptops, TVs and Blu-ray players, this Christmas.

The full price will be payable in-store and customers will have until 31 January 2011 to claim the VAT back from Sony on purchases made between 28 October and 24 December 2010.

Sony points out that, while the VAT rate is a standard 21pc, this is added to the “net” or “ex-VAT” price of Sony products to give the retail price the customer paid, so VAT is at 17.36pc rather than 21pc.

The campaign will be supported by retailers such as Sony Centres, Euronics, Expery, Harvey Norman, Powercity, Soundstore and authorised Sony dealers throughout Ireland.

“Next year is likely to be a tough time for everyone, and with Christmas around the corner, getting the ‘VAT back’ will hopefully make the difference for anyone in two minds about whether to make that extra special purchase for the family or as a  Christmas gift,” said Sushil Teji, general manager of Sony Ireland.

The deal is applicable for BRAVIA TVs, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems, cameras and camcorders, camera accessories, e-readers and VAIO laptops.

Sony also has a dedicated online hub that has more details.

The company also launched an above the line advertising campaign for the scheme, where an extended two-minute version was seen during the X-Factor on TV3 last night. It’s based on A Christmas Carol and starred Sir Derek Jacobi as Scrooge.
