Olay, Visa and Buick are among the brands sponsoring a series of screensavers for a new, less expensive version of Amazon’s Kindle, which is set to ship on 3 May.

According to Amazon, Kindle with Special Offers is the same as the standard Kindle, but will include special offers and sponsored screensavers. While the standard product sells for US$139 in the US, the sponsored version will retail at US$114.

Examples of deals that will be delivered directly to Kindle with Special Offers devices in the initial weeks include: US$10 for US$20 Amazon.com Gift Card; US$6 for six audible books (normally US$68); US$1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 Store; US$10 for US$30 of products in the Amazon Denim Shop or Amazon Swim Shop; free US$100 Amazon.com Gift Card when you get an Amazon Rewards Visa Card (normally US$30).

Amazon has also announced the introduction of ‘AdMash’, a free Kindle app and website where customers choose the most attractive and engaging display advertisements that will become Kindle sponsored screensavers.

Users will be presented with pairs of sponsored screensaver candidates and asked to select which one they prefer. Screensavers with the most preferred votes qualify to become sponsored screensavers. The AdMash Kindle app will launch in the coming weeks but a preview can be viewed online.
