Sony revealed more details of the PlayStation Portable successor at E3 2011 – now called the PlayStation Vita – which will cost €249-€299.

PlayStation Vita

Speaking at this year’s E3 conference, Sony confirmed the name of the device, which was previously referred to as the NGP.

The PlayStation Vita will cost €249 for the Wi-Fi-only model and €299 for the Wi-Fi and 3G model. Sony will partner with AT&T to bring the 3G Vita to the US market. No network partnerships were confirmed for Ireland as of yet.

Sony highlighted that connectivity is a key objective for the PlayStation Vita, hoping to deliver rich gaming and social experiences.

The first PS Vita games include Uncharted: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet and Ruin. Third-person shooter Uncharted: Golden Abyss will take advantage of the PS Vita’s OLED screen with cinematic visuals.

LittleBigPlanet utilises the front touchscreen and rear touch pad, along with its front and rear-facing cameras to help gamers create new experiences.

Ruin, currently a working title, offers a “social action RPG experience” which will let players save their games on the PS Vita and continue playing at home on a PS3.

Other titles will include WipEout, ModNation Racers and Super Stardust.

The PS Vita will launch globally at the end of 2011.

PSN apology

SCEA president Jack Tretton took the opportunity to apologise to third-party developers for the recent PSN outage after recent hacks, acknowledging the loss in revenue they experienced during this time.

He also apologised to gamers for “taking you away from doing what you love to do.” He said the PSN was 90pc back to what it was.

New games

Naughty Dog revealed a new level from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The game will include stereoscopic 3D support.

Sly Cooper will return in a new game – Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time – which will also support stereoscopic 3D.

There will be new titles for the PlayStation Move motion controller, including Everybody Dance and action adventure Medievil Moves: Deadmund’s Quest.

Another new title revealed was Dust514 from CCP which syncs up with MMO EVE Online. It, too, will be compatible with the PlayStation Move.

Content from upcoming first-person shooter BioShock Infinite was shown, which will also have PlayStation Move support. It will include the original Bioshock on the PS3 Blu-ray disc.

Shooter Battlefield 3 will also have extra content, as EA plans to put Battlefield 1943 on the same disc.
