Nokia unveils MeeGo smartphone – the N9

21 Jun 2011

Nokia will release a smartphone running on the MeeGo operating system, in spite of the fact the company is moving away from this platform.

The Nokia N9, which was announced at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore, will be the first pure touch phone. In order to get to the home screen, users swipe from the edge of the screen.

The body of the phone is made from a single piece of polycarbonate with curved glass. It has a 3.9-inch AMOLED screen and a camera with an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss auto-focus sensor and wide-angle lens.

It’s equipped with NFC technology to offer the ability to share data between devices by touching them together, which could be used for future mobile payment services. It also has Dolby Headphone and Dolby Digital Plus support for improved audio capabilities.

Nokia previously said it would be shipping a MeeGo product later in the year, however, it will be moving to Windows Phone 7 as its primary operating system, putting a question mark on the longevity of the MeeGo platform.

The Nokia N9 will be available in black, cyan and magenta with either 16GB or 64GB storage. It’s due out later in the year.
