Android pips Apple for biggest share of US smartphone market

28 Jul 2011

Google’s Android operating system now claims the largest share of the US consumer smartphone market with 28pc. Apple’s iOS is in second place at 28pc, while RIM BlackBerry is down to 20pc.

According to NeilsenWire, because Apple is the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS operating system, it is clearly the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States.

Other leading manufacturers include HTC, whose Android phones represent 14pc of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 accounts for 6pc of the market; and Motorola, whose Android devices are owned by 11pc of smartphone consumers.

Samsung’s Android devices are used by 8pc of smartphone owners while its Windows Mobile/Windows Phone 7 phones are used by 2pc of smartphone owners.
