Skype video calling spreads across more Android devices

Skype has released version 2.1 of its Android app, bringing video calling to more Android devices.

HTC devices will get this feature, including the Desire with Android 2.2, the Desire HD, the Evo 3D, the Flyer, the Incredible S, the Sensation and the US-only Thunderbolt.

Four Samsung devices – the Galaxy S, the Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Tab and the US-only Droid Charge – can also avail of the update.

Three Sony Ericsson phones will get Skype 2.1, including the Xperia Play, the Xperia Mini Pro and the Xperia Ray.

The Acer A5 and the US-only LG Revolution will also get video calling support.

Owners of Android 2.2 Froyo phones which are not on the list can also enable video calling by accessing Skype settings after launching the app and selecting “enable video calling.” If they cannot see this setting, then their phone cannot support Skype video calls.

Skype also warns that the quality of the app may not be as good as if it were running on any of the above certified devices. Only the back of the camera will work if the phone is running on Android 2.2 Froyo.

Skype recently launched an iPad app and is reportedly focusing on bringing Skype to Windows Phones next after Microsoft acquired the company.
