Apple iPad 3 tipped for early 2012 launch

19 Aug 2011

Apple plans to launch its third-generation iPad in early 2012. The new device will come with an ultra-high resolution – 2,048 x 1,536 – Retina display.

This compares with 1,024 x 768 on the iPad 2.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is working with component suppliers and its contract manufacturer in Asia, Foxconn, on the trial production of the next generation of its popular tablet computer family.

Apple is understood to have ordered key components, such as display panels and chips, for the new product.

Taiwan industry website DigiTimes reported earlier this week that problems with the larger Retina display forced Apple to delay its launch. The new iPad will be 9.7 inches, exactly the same scale as the iPad 1 and iPad 2.

In related news, Apple is understood to be planning pre-orders for its next-generation iPhone 5, which is expected to be announced around 30 September and will ship around 7 October.
