Samsung and Google hosting 11 October event for Ice Cream Sandwich?

29 Sep 2011

Google and Samsung have announced an Android event for 11 October, which is likely to reveal the first device to run on the next version of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich.

TechCrunch reports the Google/Samsung event invitation, called the ‘Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011: Google Episode,’ says both companies will show “what’s new from Android,” suggesting they will reveal the latest version of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich – and the next Nexus phone.

Not much has been revealed about Ice Cream Sandwich, however, Google has said it will unify the tablet and mobile operating systems. It is expected to be released in October or November.

Along with the latest version of Android, the next Nexus device could be unveiled. The Nexus project involves Google collaborating with an Android OEM to develop a flagship device for the Christmas season, which will be the first phone with the next version of Android. The Nexus One was developed with HTC and the Nexus S was developed with Samsung.

The next Nexus phone is expected to be called the Nexus Prime and Google has apparently collaborated with Samsung again. It’s expected to have a dual-core processor and a large, 4.5-inch to 4.65-inch screen.

If they are revealing the next Nexus device, then its unveiling will come a week after the iPhone 5 announcement, making it an eventful October for smartphone fans.
