Apple to launch 15-inch Macbook Air in early 2012?

Apple will reportedly launch a 15-inch version of the Macbook Air in early 2012 alongside upgrades to the 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models of the ultraslim laptop.

DigiTimes reports that manufacturers have started the pilot production of the new MacBook Airs, which will include a 15-inch model.

Apple may also drop the price of its current MacBook Air range before launching new versions.

The rumours come as PC vendors looks towards the ultrabook category of devices, which offer slim laptops with high quality specs.

The launch of the first MacBook Air range spurred competitors to invest in this category. Intel recently announced a US$300m Ultrabook Fund to help drive this category and HP and Toshiba revealed their first ultrabook offerings last week.

Apple has already gotten rid of its standard MacBook laptop in favour of selling the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro instead. By adding a new 15-inch MacBook Air, it’ll further solidify Apple’s commitment to an ultra-slim range of laptops.
