The iPad 2

Apple’s iBooks Store experienced more than 350,000 textbook downloads just three days after the company launched its new education initiative, says Global Equities Research.

AllThingsD reports that there were also 90,000 downloads of iBooks Author, an app from the Mac App Store which lets users design their own textbooks on the platform.

If accurate, then it’s a strong start for Apple's plans to take on digital education. Last week, it revealed iBooks Store 2, which launched new textbooks specifically designed for the iPad.

It has partnered with educational publishers such as Pearson, McGraw-Hill and Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt to bring rich media textbooks to students through the iPad. These publishers create 90pc of the textbooks now available to high school students in the US.

Textbooks will be available for every level of education, with second-level textbooks costing US$14.99.
