Smartphones make up half of mobile market share in US

Smartphones now account for almost half (49.7pc) of mobile phone ownership in the US since February 2012, according to new research.

Research firm Nielsen reports that in February 2011, 36pc of US mobile phone subscribers owned a smartphone.

More than two-thirds of those who purchased a new mobile phone in the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone, which has driven this growth.

As for operating systems, Android currently leads the smartphone market in the US, with 48pc of the smartphone market.

The iPhone came second at 32.1pc and BlackBerry devices came third, making up 11pc of the smartphone market.

Of those who bought a smartphone within the last three months in the US, 48pc bought an Android phone while 43pc bought an iPhone.
