Halo 4, the latest instalment in the blockbuster shooter game series for the Xbox and Xbox 360, will launch globally on 6 November.

The game is set four years after the events of Halo 3 and sees the return of Master Chief, who must face an ancient evil which threatens the universe.

Halo 4 is being developed by 343 Industries and will kick off a new trilogy of the series. The series has seen huge success, selling more than 40m games globally. Halo 3 was the biggest consumer product launch of all time when it was released in 2007.

“We are beginning a new saga with Halo 4 and embarking on a journey that will encompass the next decade of Halo games and experiences,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice-president of Microsoft Studios.

“Millions of fans worldwide have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to step back into the boots of Master Chief, and, with Halo 4 leading the charge, we’re confident 2012 will be the most successful year in Xbox history,” he said.

The game’s soundtrack is being composed by Neil Davidge, who is best known as a co-writer and producer for the last three albums from Massive Attack.
