An artist has teamed up with a radio control helicopter expert to create the ‘Orvillecopter’, a flying machine that includes the artist’s taxidermied cat attached to propellers.
Orvillecopter has been unveiled at the Kunstrai Art Festival in Amsterdam, and the artist, Bart Jansen, told reporters the tribute to his tabby cat, Orville, is fitting, as he was named after aviation pioneer Orville Wright.
“After a period of mourning, he received his propellers posthumously,” Jansen said, and added his “half cat, half machine” creation will soon be “flying with the birds”.
The Orvillecopter features plastic propellers attached to each of the cat’s paws, but according to Jansen, work on the helicopter won’t stop there.
“He will receive more powerful engines and larger props for his birthday,” Jansen said.
Orville died after being hit by a car.
Jansen’s works of art, according to a statement, “are mostly about the race for technological progress in combination with the human error that surrounds this progress.”
