China now has 538m online users

19 Jul 2012

The Chinese Government’s China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) has today released a report indicating that China’s online population has morphed to hit the 538m-user mark, representing 39.9pc of the population.

China already had the world’s biggest online population, having already bypassed the 500m user mark in January, but the latest figures, according to the CNNIC, reflect an 11pc increase from 2011 levels.

And internet users in China are increasingly accessing the web via their mobiles. The CNNIC said 388m people were using their mobile phones to access the net – up 22pc from a year earlier.

“Smartphones are more and more powerful and there is a new wave of mobile application innovation,” the report said.

Apparently mobile users now make up more than 70pc of the country’s total internet-connected population.
