Laying claim to being the world’s largest smart, 3D and HD television, LG’s ultra high-definition 84-inch TV will go on sale in the company’s native South Korea in late August.

The 84-inch display – that’s more than 2 metres diagonally – features a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 and claims to maintain full 1080p picture for 3D film and TV.

The 84LM9600 model is an ideal TV for 4K-resolution video content; however, this is still a rare format, though the TV isn’t too far ahead of its time when it comes to 3D.

LG’s Cinema 3D technology uses a film-type patterned retarder (FPR), which can cut resolution in half – but with a TV this packed with pixels there’s no danger of losing out.

The UHDTV will also come with a 2.2-channel sound system featuring for ‘3D surround’.

Engadget reports the TV will cost 25m South Korean won, which amounts to €17,896 at current rates.

A limited initial release of 84 units will start shipping in late August and it is hoped that LG will release more UD products to global markets later this year.
