Amazon expected to unveil new tablets and smartphone today

6 Sep 2012

E-commerce and cloud computing giant Amazon is expected to reveal today a new smartphone based on the same Android OS it developed to power its Kindle Fire tablet devices.

The rumour mill is in overdrive about Amazon in terms of the new technologies it is preparing to unleash, including new Android 4 versions of its Kindle Fire tablet, including a 10.1-inch version.

Amazon is also expected to reveal a new backlit E Ink Kindle e-book reader featuring a new Paperwhite display, which improves the display experience to be even more like reading real paper, if that’s possible.

Already ads have been spotted in the US showing what appear to be the new e-reader and a new 7-inch tablet device with a pretty vivid display.

Along with new hardware, Amazon is understood to be in the midst of securing deals with various content houses, such as book publishers, TV and film producers and comic book companies, to boost the range of content available for its tablet and e-reader devices.

The new devices and content deals are expected to be revealed at a press event at 10.30am in California (6.30pm GMT), so stay tuned.
