107th anniversary of Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in Slumberland receives Google Doodle treatment

Internet search giant Google has recreated the adventures of Little Nemo in Slumberland from cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay in an animated Google Doodle.

The stylised Google logo on Google’s homepage on the 107^th anniversary of Little Nemo is Slumberland has a dream-like quality to it, taking the user through different animated panels as he or she clicks on a tab at the bottom right of the doodle.

Little Nemo is Slumberland first appeared on 15 October 1905 in the New York Herald and ran until 1911. The comic strip centred around a little boy and his adventures in trying to reach the Princess of Slumberland, who wants Nemo as a playmate.

McCay himself first appeared on 26 September 1869 in Springlake, Michigan. He received basic art training as a child and worked in printing and engraving as an adult.

A Tale of the Jungle Imps by Felix Fiddle came to be his first major comic strip series, appearing in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

In 1911, publishing mogul William Randolph Hurst hired McCay as an editorial cartoonist for his morning newspaper, New York American. McCay also ventured into animated cartoons with Gertie the Dinosaur and a short Little Nemo film.

He is regarded as having a set a standard for Walt Disney and others in animation.

McCay died on 26 July 1934 in Brooklyn, New York, of a cerebral embolism.
