Ahead of the launch of Windows 8 at midnight tonight, Microsoft’s Windows lead in Ireland Patrick Ward dropped by with a convertible machine to give us a hint of what consumers can expect.
The most significant thing about the new OS is its new user interface that works equally by touch as well as by mouse and keyboard.
It presents a template for users to bring their digital lifestyle to the fore putting apps like Skype and Internet Explorer alongside real-time feeds from Facebook, Twitter and more.
Ward demonstrated the versatility of the new interface on a Lenovo Yoga convertible PC/tablet and showed how users can have multiple profiles for family members with safety settings, allowing children to create their own personalised and safe zone, for example, with all their apps in one place.
More than 1,000 new devices across the world will be enabled for Windows 8 and from tomorrow more than 50 new machines in various form factors, from tablets to convertibles, all-in-ones and ultrabooks.
Ward showed us the versatility of some of the new apps that have been created for Windows 8, how users can have multiple apps performing at the same time, the flexibility of the new Internet Explorer 10 and some of the safety and personalisation features for families.
