Want an 84-inch TV? OK, that will set you back €27,000

10 Dec 2012

Harvey Norman this morning revealed the biggest TV ever to go on sale in Ireland has arrived, the LG 84LM960V. It is also perhaps the most expensive to go on sale. In the post-Budget gloom, most likely Lotto winners and the odd bailed-out bank pensioner might fancy one.

The 84-inch monster (the biggest TVs on the market are around 65 inches) is an LG Ultra HD TV and costs €26,999, including home survey and installation.

At that price, personally, I would expect a new kitchen thrown in, too.

The LG 84LM960V includes LG’s Smart TV and Cinema 3D technology, has Wi-Fi built-in and features a 2.2 Speaker system consisting of two 10W speakers and two 15W woofers.

The monster TV is on display at Harvey Normans’ Carrickmines store in Dublin and will be available for delivery in the new year.

It also comes with a 3D Depth Control feature that allows users to fine tune the distance between near and far objects on the screen for a custom 3D experience.

Now, imagine being able to use this while watching a 3D Blu-ray version of The Hobbit which was shot at 48 frames per second. I don’t think we’d ever leave Middle Earth.

While there can’t be many people left in Ireland who can afford to spend close to 30 grand on a TV, it nevertheless might be a curiosity worth admiring in anticipation of better times ahead.

The speed of change hitting display technology will one day see every conceivable surface, such as walls, doors and tables, potentially become an interactive display. But at 84 inches that’s about as big as it gets for now. Now, if only my bank balance was quite so big.
