This month, Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone, the Lumia 920, became available from Irish operators. To get to grips with the new handset, we had product experience manager Adam Giles take us through some of its best features.

The mid-range Lumia 820 was made available in Ireland before Christmas last year, but now we can also get our hands on the premium device from Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 range. This flagship smartphone features Nokia PureView imaging innovation by way of an advanced floating lens that gives the 8.7MP rear camera extra stability. Nokia claims this enables the camera to capture five times more light without flash than its competitors and create blur-free images and video in low light.

Encased in a polycarbonate shell, the 920 features a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ WXGA IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1,280 x 768. This makes for a clear and bright touchscreen that also uses ClearBlack technology to ensure colours always appear the same no matter what the ambient lighting.

Inside the 920, you have 32GB storage (plus 7GB storage from SkyDrive), 1GB RAM, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2,000mAh battery and an NFC chip. As a Windows Phone device, the 920 comes with Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer 10 and Xbox apps pre-loaded but Nokia has also packed it with some of its own apps, such as Nokia Drive, Nokia Music, City Lens and Nokia Maps, which has seen encouraging take-up by the motor industry for its comprehensive mapping service.

Another unique feature of the 920 is Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) wireless charging technology. This is the world’s first mass market smartphone to feature this technology and Giles tells us to expect a range of accessories designed to utilise it.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is available now from O2 from €539 on pre-pay or from €229 on bill-pay
