Spanish airline Iberia may well have come up with an industry first with its new service MyBagTag that lets passengers print their own luggage tags at home.

Passengers who check in for their flights online can now specify the number of bags they want to check in and then download, print and attach the tags to their luggage themselves.

The objectives of the MyBagTag service is to improve the punctuality of flights, save passengers time at the airport, and help them ensure their luggage is heading to where it is actually meant to go.

MyBagTag has been tested in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Palma de Majora and Alicante airports and the automatic tag reading reportedly proved to be 100pc reliable, regardless of what ink, paper or printer passengers used to print the tags, Airportsinternational.com reported.

At the moment, MyBagTag can be used on Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum direct flights. Plans are afoot, however, to include other European and overseas destinations, as well as support connecting flights.
