Royal baby born, internet memes follow

23 Jul 2013

If there’s one thing that’s now a certainty online, it’s the creation of internet memes following a major event. For example, last year’s London Olympics and Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation inspired memes, and now, at barely a day old, the new royal baby is front and centre in the new batch of images with overlaid captions.

The son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Catherine, the former Kate Middleton, was born in London at 4.24pm yesterday. Soon afterwards, memes spun off the event began to spring up across the internet.

The royal couple may leave St Mary’s Hospital with their baby today, hopefully giving royal watchers a glimpse of the third person in line to the British throne.

The baby’s name has yet to be announced. Bookies have been taking bets on a possible moniker, and Newstalk has tweeted that Ireland’s Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has even suggested a name: Eamon.
